| Additional information |
Issued by Portugal's national mint to mark the 52nd anniversary of the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 — the largely bloodless military coup that ended nearly five decades of Estado Novo authoritarian rule and set Portugal on the path toward democratic governance and decolonization. The revolution takes its name from the carnations placed into soldiers' rifle barrels by Lisbon civilians on the day of the coup.
