Part of the Monnaie de Paris "Monuments de France" series, this issue was released in the same year the Eiffel Tower celebrated its 125th anniversary — having opened for the 1889 Exposition Universelle as a structure the city's artistic establishment largely despised. Maupassant famously lunched at the Tower's restaurant specifically because it was the one place in Paris where he didn't have to look at it.
The Palais de Chaillot, built for the 1937 Exposition Internationale, replaced the older Trocadéro palace on the same site — its curved wings deliberately framing a direct sightline across the Seine.
