Additional information

Issued as part of France's ongoing "Grands Hommes" commemorative program, this piece marks the famously complicated relationship between de Gaulle and Churchill — men who depended on each other and frequently couldn't stand it. Churchill reportedly told colleagues more than once that the heaviest cross he bore during the war was the Cross of Lorraine. De Gaulle, for his part, never forgave the British for prioritizing their American alliance over French sovereignty at key moments in 1944.

The Monnaie de Paris struck this in .999 fine silver rather than the .900 standard of earlier French commemoratives — a shift that became consistent across the prestige collector series from roughly 2019 onward.
