Issued to coincide with France's hosting of the Biathlon World Championships at Haute-Maurienne Vanoise in 2005, this piece belongs to the Monnaie de Paris sports series that ran alongside growing French investment in winter sports infrastructure during the early 2000s. The .920 gold alloy — sometimes called crown gold — was a deliberate historical nod rather than a purely commercial choice, echoing pre-Revolutionary French coinage standards that the Monnaie de Paris had largely abandoned for over a century.
