Issued to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Austerlitz, fought on 2 December 1805 — Napoleon's tactical masterpiece, in which roughly 68,000 French troops decisively defeated a combined Austro-Russian force nearly 90,000 strong. The victory directly forced Austria out of the Third Coalition and led within weeks to the Treaty of Pressburg, stripping the Habsburgs of significant territory and effectively ending the Holy Roman Empire the following year.
The Monnaie de Paris has issued commemoratives tied to Napoleonic anniversaries with some regularity; this sits in a line stretching back decades. Austerlitz specifically recurs because it remains the engagement most associated with Napoleon at his operational peak.
