Issued as part of the Monnaie de Paris' ongoing "Grands Hommes" series, this piece honors Rodin in the centenary year of his death — he died in November 1917, in part because the French government had requisitioned the villa where he lived and worked, leaving him without adequate shelter in deteriorating health. The irony that the state contributed to his death while later minting coins in his honor is not lost on scholars of the period.
The .333 fineness places this firmly in billon territory — silver content low enough that these circulated alongside base-metal issues without meaningful distinction to everyday users.
