Issued as part of Italy's long-running "Grandi Artisti Italiani" series, this coin commemorates Mantegna five centuries after his death in 1506. Mantegna spent the better part of his career in Mantua under Ludovico II Gonzaga, whose court he entered in 1460 after a protracted and contentious legal dispute to release him from his earlier obligations in Padua — a fight that required direct ducal intervention.
The Zecca in Rome struck this alongside several companion issues that year, each tied to a specific quincentenary or anniversary falling in 2006.
