Reverse description The reverse bears a finely detailed three-quarter bust of the Flemish humanist scholar Justus Lipsius, depicted facing slightly to the left, wearing period Renaissance attire including an elaborate ruffled collar and richly detailed doublet. He is shown seated at a writing surface, with one hand resting near an open book or document, conveying his identity as a man of letters. The Latin form of his name 'IVSTVS LIPSVS' is inscribed in the upper right field, accompanied by a decorative flourish or cartouche device. His birth and death years '1547' and '1606' are inscribed below the name in two lines. A fine beaded or dentilated border frames the design.
