Issued to mark the 175th anniversary of Belgian railways, which began with the Mechelen–Brussels line on May 5, 1835 — the first public steam railway on the European continent. Belgium's state railway, the NMBS/SNCB, was also one of the earliest examples of a nationally owned rail network, a deliberate political choice by the young Belgian state to bind its territory together after independence from the Netherlands in 1830.
