Twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a partial arc flank the eagle on either side, evoking the European Union motif. | Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly detailed commemorative composition celebrating 1,200 years of the city of Magdeburg. The twin-towered Gothic facade of Magdeburg Cathedral dominates the central field. Flanking the cathedral in four corner panels are notable landmarks and symbols of the city: upper left, a sculptural group depicting the Magdeburg Virgin (Magdeburger Jungfrauen); upper right, an equestrian statue of Emperor Otto I; lower left, a stylized rendering of the Green Citadel (Grüne Zitadelle); and lower right, a Romanesque church. Two additional emblems appear in the middle registers: at left, a medieval orb reliquary, and at right, a Magdeburg fool's cap.
