| Obverse description | The stylized German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) displayed facing, with wings spread and head turned to the right, occupies the central field. Twelve five-pointed stars arranged in a partial arc flank the eagle on either side, evoking the European Union motif. The curved legend BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND arcs across the upper field, while the denomination 10 EURO appears along the lower field with the date 2005 to the left and the mint mark A centered at the base. |

| Reverse description | The reverse presents a richly detailed commemorative composition celebrating 1,200 years of the city of Magdeburg. The twin-towered Gothic facade of Magdeburg Cathedral dominates the central field. Flanking the cathedral in four corner panels are notable landmarks and symbols of the city: upper left, a sculptural group depicting the Magdeburg Virgin (Magdeburger Jungfrauen); upper right, an equestrian statue of Emperor Otto I; lower left, a stylized rendering of the Green Citadel (Grüne Zitadelle); and lower right, a Romanesque church. Two additional emblems appear in the middle registers: at left, a medieval orb reliquary, and at right, a Magdeburg fool's cap. The legend MAGDEBURG arcs across the upper field, and 1200 JAHRE is inscribed along the lower field, with the engraver's monogram HH visible in the lower center. |
