This is one of several pattern pieces struck in 2003 as Switzerland evaluated potential euro coinage designs during a period when EU membership — and eurozone participation — remained under active political discussion. Switzerland ultimately retained the franc, and these essais never progressed beyond trial status. The "Europ Ceros" designation reflects a proposed pan-European series concept that circulated among minting authorities in the early 2000s without ever reaching ratification.
