| Additional information |
This piece belongs to Germany's "German Porcelain" commemorative series, issued to mark 300 years since Johann Friedrich Böttger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus cracked the secret of hard-paste porcelain manufacture at Meissen in 1708 — ending over a century of European dependency on Chinese imports. Augustus the Strong of Saxony, who had essentially imprisoned Böttger to force the discovery, immediately established the Meissen manufactory in 1710 under lock and key to protect the formula as a state monopoly.
The silver-plated composition rather than sterling reflects the collector-grade bullion economy of the German commemorative program by this point.
