| Obverse description | The sixth coat of arms of the Republic of Malta occupies the central field, depicting a shield quarterly divided between the George Cross and vertical stripes, surmounted by a mural crown with five towers. The shield is flanked by two symmetrical branches — an olive branch to the left and a palm frond to the right — tied at the base by a ribbon bearing the legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA in the Maltese language. The issuer name MALTA appears to the left of the arms and the date 2024 to the right, both in the inner field. The frosted devices are set against a mirror-polished background, and the outer border is adorned with a ring of twelve five-pointed stars in the European Union tradition. |

Malta held a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the first time in its history during 2023–2024, a remarkable position for one of the world's smallest states by both area and population. The island nation had applied for the seat years prior, running against Ireland and Canada in a 2020 vote that ultimately went to Ireland — Malta's eventual selection came through a separate electoral cycle for the 2023–2024 term.
The Central Bank issued this coin mid-tenure, while the seat was still active.
