The Jubilee of Mercy was an extraordinary jubilee year declared by Pope Francis, running from December 2015 through November 2016 — only the second extraordinary jubilee since 1933. San Marino, an enclaved microstate whose coinage rights derive from longstanding agreements with the Holy See, issued this piece in direct response to that proclamation. The Vatican itself struck parallel issues for the same jubilee, making San Marino's release one of several competing Catholic-jurisdiction commemoratives from that year.
