Additional information

Ján Chryzostom Korec entered the Jesuit order in 1945, was secretly ordained a bishop in 1951 at age 27 — one of the youngest in Church history — and spent the following decades under persistent surveillance, imprisonment, and forced labor at the hands of the Czechoslovak communist regime. The Vatican could not publicly acknowledge him until after the Velvet Revolution. He was elevated to cardinal by John Paul II in 1991 and served as Bishop of Nitra until 2005.

Slovakia has a long pattern of issuing collector silvers honoring figures whose significance was deliberately suppressed during the communist period.
