| Obverse description | The centre of the obverse features a detail of the Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, depicting the allegorical sculptures of the Danube at left and the Ganges at right, flanking the central obelisk. The encircling legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA is interrupted by a decorative element drawn from the geometric motif adorning the rim of the fountain's outer basin. The designer's signature U.PERNAZZA appears in the exergue. The overall composition reflects a refined sculptural aesthetic characteristic of Italian commemorative coinage. |
