| Obverse description | Central field features the armorial device of Monaco depicting a knight in full armour on horseback, rendered in the style of the Grimaldi coat of arms. The equestrian figure is shown in a dynamic pose, holding a sword and shield. Surrounding the central motif is a ring of twelve stars representing the European Union, with the country name MONACO inscribed in the upper legend and the date below in the exergue area. The design was engraved by Roger Bertrand Baron and reflects the heraldic tradition of the Principality. |

Monaco's euro coinage required special negotiation — the Principality is not an EU member, but a 2001 monetary agreement with the European Union granted it the right to issue a limited quantity of euro coins annually, proportional to its domestic circulation needs. For this first series, that quota was extraordinarily small, keeping mintages far below those of any eurozone state. Rainier III died in April 2005, cutting the run short and ensuring the 2001–2004 issues form a self-contained type.
