Additional information

Pietro Mennea's 10.92-second 200-metre world record, set in Mexico City at the 1979 World University Games, stood for 17 years — longer than any other world record in a sprint event during the 20th century. The altitude of Mexico City, at roughly 2,240 metres, was a factor critics never let go of, though Mennea had also run 10.01 in the 100m at sea level. He finally silenced most doubters with his 1980 Moscow Olympic gold, won at 28 — considered ancient for a sprinter.

Mennea died in 2013, making this a posthumous tribute issued the year the European Athletics Championships returned to Rome, the city where he competed under the Azzurri banner repeatedly.
