Obverse description Central device depicting the Portuguese royal arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere, with the shield displaying the traditional quinas and castles of Portugal. The armillary sphere, symbol of Portuguese maritime exploration, is rendered with meridian and equatorial bands. A mural crown surmounts the globe above the shield. The colonial denomination '10$00' appears in the lower field, while the encircling legend reads 'COLONIA DE S. TOMÉ E PRINCIPE' around the periphery.
