Apafi ruled Transylvania as an Ottoman vassal, installed by the Porte in 1661 after years of catastrophic warfare had left the principality without a credible candidate the Habsburgs could control. These large multiple-ducat presentation pieces were not struck for trade — they functioned as diplomatic gifts and were distributed to Ottoman officials whose continued goodwill kept Apafi on his throne. The 1668 date falls squarely within his most politically precarious decade.
The Resch variant designation suggests a die difference from the catalogued standard, a common occurrence with pieces of this denomination where individual dies were often prepared for specific presentation occasions rather than continuous production runs.
