| Obverse description | Enthroned frontal effigy of Emperor Charles IV in full imperial regalia, wearing a jewelled crown and pontifical vestments, holding a sceptre in his right hand and an orb in his left. The emperor is flanked on either side by large heraldic eagles with spread wings, each standing beside an armorial shield — the Imperial eagle shield to the left and the Bohemian lion shield to the right. The dates 1378 and 1978, separated by a mintmaster's mark, appear in a decorative cartouche below the throne, commemorating the 600th anniversary of the emperor's death. The peripheral legend in Gothic-style Latin lettering runs around the entire obverse field. |

The "Aureus Magnus" series was issued by the German Federal Republic as legal tender fantasy multiples — large-format gold pieces produced for the bullion and collector market rather than any circulation purpose. Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, founded Prague's Charles University in 1348 and issued the Golden Bull of 1356, the constitutional document that governed the election of Holy Roman Emperors for over four centuries. The 1978 piece uses his image as a prestige anchor for the series.
At .980 fine, the alloy sits notably purer than traditional European ducat standard of .986 — close, but a deliberate commercial specification rather than a historical one.
