| Obverse description | The Basel basilisk, a fearsome winged dragon with scaly body and eagle-like head, stands erect in the centre of the field, clutching an ornate cartouche-shaped shield bearing the city arms of Basel. The creature's serpentine tail coils beneath it, and its wings are spread wide in a dynamic, high-relief composition characteristic of the Baroque engraving tradition. The peripheral legend encircles the design close to the milled border, reading: DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE. |
