Obverse description Central shield bearing the Bernese bear passant, surmounted by an elaborate open crown with floral ornaments, supported on the dexter side by an upright crowned bear grasping a lance and on the sinister side by a rampant lion, all set within a finely engraved baroque cartouche with foliate decoration at the base. The circular Latin legend BERNENSIS * MONETA * REIPVBLICÆ runs along the periphery, separated by decorative star stops. The entire design is executed in high relief characteristic of the finest late-17th-century Swiss goldsmithing.
