The Doume is a local complementary currency launched in the Puy-de-Dôme département of Auvergne, circulating alongside the euro within a network of participating businesses and associations. These currencies — sometimes called monnaies locales complémentaires — proliferated across France following the 2014 law on the Social and Solidarity Economy, which gave them formal legal recognition for the first time. The Doume was among the earlier adoptions of that framework.
Printed locally rather than through a specialist security printer, the notes rely on design integrity and network trust rather than conventional anti-counterfeiting technology.
