A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto MAJULAH SINGAPURA in Latin lettering. The country name appears in three scripts arranged around the periphery: SINGAPURA arcing along the upper legend in Latin, the Tamil inscription சிங்கப்பூர் along the left field, and the Chinese characters 新加坡 along the right field.
