Singapore's piedfort lunar issues occupy a specific niche in the mint's output — double-thickness strikes produced in deliberately low quantities alongside the standard bullion release. The 2004 Monkey falls within the second cycle of Singapore's 12-year lunar series, which the mint had been running since the early 1980s. Piedfort versions were not issued for every year in the series, making gaps in a complete piedfort run nearly inevitable for collectors who came to the format late.
