Namibia issued this piece as part of a broader FIFA-licensed commemorative program ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa — the first tournament held on African soil. Though the matches were played next door, Namibia's participation in the licensing arrangement reflected the regional economic and political ties between the two countries, and the Bank of Namibia produced several denominations across the series. Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium, the venue referenced here, was purpose-built for the tournament at a cost of approximately 3.1 billion rand.
