Gustav Vasa's 1523 election as King of Sweden ended the Kalmar Union and terminated Danish dominance over Scandinavia — a seismic political rupture that had been building since Christian II's massacre of Swedish nobles at the Stockholm Bloodbath in 1520. That event, which killed roughly 90 bishops, nobles, and burghers over two days, was the direct catalyst for Vasa's uprising.
Liberia issued dozens of these copper-nickel commemoratives throughout the 2000s under licensing arrangements that had little connection to the subjects depicted. This piece was never intended for Liberian circulation.
