Catskill's Tradesmen's Bank had a short and troubled existence — New York's free banking environment of the early 1820s spawned dozens of undercapitalized institutions, and many folded within a decade of opening. Whether this note ever circulated at par is doubtful; upstate New York merchants routinely discounted paper from unfamiliar country banks, and Catskill issues were no exception.

Peter Maverick, who engraved and printed this plate from his New York City shop, was one of the most prolific bank note engravers of the period before the specialty firms consolidated the trade in the 1830s. The "20th Century Reprints" designation indicates this example was struck from the original Maverick plate or a facsimile thereof — not a circulated original.
