Additional information

Palau's collector coin program has issued hundreds of themed silver pieces since the 1990s, almost none of which circulate and most of which are struck by European mints on contract. This piece commemorates the Metropolitan Opera, founded in New York in 1883 after a group of newly wealthy industrialists — the Vanderbilts and their circle — found themselves unable to secure boxes at the old Academy of Music, which was controlled by established Knickerbocker families. They simply built a competing house.

The Met's original Broadway and 39th Street building burned in 1892, destroying the stage and most of the scenery inventory.
