The Bank of West Florida was chartered in 1831 and operated out of Apalachicola, then one of the most commercially active cotton ports on the Gulf Coast. Florida was still a territory — not yet a state — and banking regulation was, charitably speaking, loose. The bank collapsed within a few years of opening, leaving outstanding notes unredeemed.
Apalachicola-printed territorial Florida notes from failed institutions are among the more elusive survivals in Southern obsolete currency. Most were discarded or burned after redemption failed; those that remain do so by accident rather than design.
