Jamaica's 1984 Los Angeles Olympics commemorative series was issued partly as a revenue-generating exercise — the IOC's aggressive licensing program in the early 1980s made such national mint partnerships a reliable hard-currency earner for smaller economies. Los Angeles itself was the only bidding city for the 1984 Games after the Soviet-led boycott of the previous cycle poisoned the political atmosphere around Olympic hosting. The Games proceeded without the USSR and most Eastern Bloc nations, making the event simultaneously triumphant for the West and hollow in competitive terms.
KM#125 is one of several denominations Jamaica issued for the occasion, struck in .925 silver to proof standard.
