Obverse description The obverse displays the national seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands at center, featuring a frigatebird with outstretched wings above a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation instrument, flanked by palm trees to the left and a traditional outrigger sailing canoe to the right, with a radiant sun at the top of the design. Two crossed traditional implements appear above the central device, and the entire composition is enclosed within a decorative rope-and-chain border. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination $10 appears to the left and the date 1996 to the right. The Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN curves along the lower border, with the word SEAL inscribed beneath the central device.

Additional information

The Marshall Islands operated a prolific commemorative coin program throughout the 1990s, targeting collector markets rather than circulation — these brass issues were never intended as spending money. Endeavour was NASA's replacement orbiter, built as a structural spare and completed in 1991 after Challenger's destruction in 1986, making it the newest of the shuttle fleet at the time this coin was struck.

The Republic's authority to issue legal tender coinage is legitimate under its constitution, though the program's commercial nature drew skepticism from serious collectors almost immediately.
