Issued to mark the Golden Wedding Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1997, this coin was part of a wave of commemorative releases across Commonwealth nations that year. Sierra Leone, despite being in the throes of a brutal civil war — the RUF had captured Freetown just months prior — still participated in the standard Commonwealth commemorative program through its nominal issuing authority.
