Issued in the same year Diana died — August 1997 — this Sierra Leone commemorative was part of a wave of memorial coinage rushed to market by smaller Commonwealth and associate nations following her death in Paris. Sierra Leone had no particular constitutional or political connection to Diana; the issue was frankly commercial, capitalizing on global grief. KM#90 is one of several Diana-themed strikes the country produced across the 1990s.
