Additional information

Victor II, born Gebhard of Dollnstein-Hirschberg, was the last pope appointed through direct imperial intervention — selected personally by Holy Roman Emperor Henry III at the Council of Regensburg in 1054, over the objections of the Roman clergy. His four-year pontificate ended in 1057, and Henry III predeceased him by less than two years, effectively closing the era of unchecked imperial control over papal succession. The Investiture Controversy that consumed the following decades grew directly from the power vacuum his death helped create.

Liberia's early 2000s silver commemorative program covered an ambitious sweep of medieval Church history, with these 20g pieces struck for the collector market rather than any circulation purpose.
