| Reverse description | The reverse presents a dramatic high-relief scene depicting the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD. In the upper right field, the erupting volcano is rendered with vivid polychrome color — glowing lava flows in fiery orange and red tones burst upward against a deeply colored sky of dark blue and purple, evoking ash clouds and falling debris. In the foreground, a multitude of figures in Roman dress are shown in chaotic flight: a mounted soldier on horseback rides through the scene, while citizens flee in panic, some carrying belongings. To the left, a grand Roman temple with Corinthian columns and a sculptured pediment dominates the middle field. The deeply antiqued silver finish throughout the field enhances the dramatic atmosphere of the catastrophic event. |
