Reverse description Finely detailed exterior view of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris rendered in antique finish, occupying the full rhombus-shaped field. The Gothic west facade and south flank of the cathedral are depicted in high relief, with flying buttresses, pinnacles, and the central spire rising into a dramatic sculpted cloudscape above. At left, a large brooding gargoyle figure is shown in three-quarter relief, resting its chin on clasped hands. The Eiffel Tower and the Parisian skyline appear in the middle distance to the right. A circular colorized inset at center replicates the cathedral's rose window in multicolored enamel tones. The legend 'NOTRE-DAME DE PARIS' arcs across the upper field in Gothic lettering, surmounted by a fleur-de-lis ornament, while a compass rose medallion appears in the lower field.

Additional information

Palau has issued commemorative silver under its own authority since the late 1990s, using the arrangement common to many small Pacific island nations — legal tender face values assigned to coins that will never circulate, produced entirely for the collector market by foreign mints, typically European. The Notre-Dame issue falls squarely into this category, with Palau having no historical or political connection to the subject whatsoever.

The cathedral itself was under active restoration in 2017 following decades of deferred maintenance — two years before the April 2019 fire that destroyed the spire and much of the roof.
