One of 28 collector issues produced for the 1976 Montréal Games, this piece belongs to the third series of Olympic silver denominations released between 1973 and 1976. The financing scheme was ambitious: Canada planned to fund a significant portion of the Games through coin sales, a strategy that ultimately fell short as the program generated far less revenue than projected — leaving Montréal with a debt that the city did not fully retire until 2006.
The .925 silver issues in the broader program are the ones collectors track seriously. At .490 fine, this piece occupies the lower tier of the series by silver content.
