Additional information

Liberia's commemorative coinage of the early 2000s was produced almost entirely for the collector export market, with little to no domestic circulation — the country was emerging from a second civil war that had effectively destroyed its formal economy. This piece was struck ahead of John Paul II's death in April 2005, part of a wave of Vatican-adjacent issues that flooded the market from non-papal issuing authorities in his final years.
