Nauru issued commemorative silver coins throughout the 2000s under licensing arrangements that had little to do with the island's own monetary affairs — the country formally uses the Australian dollar in daily commerce. This piece appeared in 2007, two years after John Paul II's death, responding to the spontaneous "Santo Subito" ("Sainthood Immediately") chants that erupted in St. Peter's Square during his April 2005 funeral. His formal canonization did not follow until 2014, under Francis.
