Namibia's independence in 1990 came after a 23-year armed conflict against South African administration, which had itself governed the territory under a League of Nations mandate originally stripped from Germany after World War I. The Bank of Namibia, established only in 1990, issued commemorative silver in the years following independence as part of a deliberate program to assert distinct monetary identity separate from the South African rand, which had circulated in the territory for decades.
The 2000 date places this coin at the ten-year anniversary of independence — a milestone the government marked with several numismatic releases.
