HMS Dorsetshire was a County-class heavy cruiser best known for firing the torpedoes that finally sank the Bismarck on 27 May 1941, after the German battleship had already been rendered unsteerable by the Royal Navy's fleet. Less celebrated is what happened three months later: Dorsetshire rescued 110 survivors from the Bismarck's crew before an unconfirmed submarine contact forced her to abandon the operation, leaving hundreds of German sailors in the water.
The cruiser herself was sunk by Japanese aircraft south of Ceylon in April 1942, going down in under eight minutes.
