| Additional information |
Palau has issued collector-focused wildlife coinage since the late 1990s, but the Glasswing series attracted particular attention for its use of real insect wing material — or transparent polymer inlays simulating the effect — embedded within the coin's design field. The Greta oto butterfly's transparent wings result from the near-total absence of scales on the wing membrane, a biological rarity that made it an obvious subject for novelty numismatic treatment.
KM#480 was produced at the Mint of Poland, which handled the majority of Palau's high-concept issues during this period.
