The Marshall Islands began issuing collector coins in 1986 under a program explicitly designed to generate government revenue rather than circulate — these pieces were legal tender in name only, produced for the philatelic and numismatic export market. The FW 190, the subject of this issue, was the Focke-Wulf fighter that outclassed the RAF's Spitfire Mk V so thoroughly upon its 1941 debut that Britain scrambled an emergency program to produce the Mk IX as a direct counter.
