The Marshall Islands issued a prolific series of commemorative dollars throughout the 1990s, largely aimed at the collector market rather than circulation. Nordic Gold — an alloy of copper, aluminum, zinc, and tin developed by the Swedish company Nordic Gold AB in the early 1990s — was adopted by several issuers during this period as a cost-effective substitute for actual gold-colored coinage. The Marshall Islands had no domestic mint; these pieces were produced under contract.
KM#379 is one of dozens of thematic issues from this run, notable mainly for the alloy choice at a time when Nordic Gold was still a relative novelty in commemorative production.
