William Bligh navigated an open launch nearly 4,000 miles from the site of the Bounty mutiny to Timor in 1789, passing through Fijian waters where he was briefly chased by hostile canoes near the islands now called the Bligh Water passage — a strait that still bears his name. Fiji's claim on Bligh is geographic rather than colonial; he never landed.
