Additional information

The "Treasure of Eldorado" series issued by Solomon Islands through the New Zealand Mint capitalized on collector demand for fractional gold in the mid-2000s, packaging small-denomination legal tender coins around the myth of El Dorado — the legendary gilded city that consumed Spanish colonial ambition in South America for roughly two centuries. Gonzalo Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana's disastrous 1541–42 expedition into the Amazon basin, searching for it, resulted in the first European navigation of the Amazon River, achieved almost by accident.
