Fiji's 2010 bullion and commemorative micro-gold issues were produced during a period when the Reserve Bank was operating under the military government of Frank Bainimarama, who had seized power in a 2006 coup. International sanctions and political isolation made these years an unusual backdrop for official coinage programs continuing under Elizabeth II's effigy.
At half a gram, this is among the smallest gold issues the Reserve Bank has produced — a format aimed squarely at the collectibles market rather than any plausible monetary function.
