Additional information

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg took over 40 years to complete — construction ran from 1818 to 1858 under architect Auguste de Montferrand, who reportedly requested burial inside the cathedral upon his death. The Russian Orthodox Church denied the request. The building consumed so much of the imperial budget that Nicholas I is said to have joked it would never be finished so that Russia would never run out of money.

Cook Islands became a reliable vehicle for this kind of high-relief architectural commemorative during the early 2010s, with dozens of world-landmark issues produced for the collector market rather than any circulation purpose.
